We offer a wide range of teaching materials, resources and services for schools using the Callan Method.
The only materials essential for teaching a Callan Method lesson are a Teacher’s Book and, at lower levels only, a Demonstration Charts Booklet containing various colour charts and images. Large posters of the more commonly used charts are available for classroom walls. Equipped with their book and charts, a teacher can conduct a Callan Method lesson in any environment. There is no need for whiteboards, audio-visual aids, handouts, or anything else.
Callan Teacher’s Books are available in printed or eBook format. They contain all the course content, lots of helpful guidance for teachers (especially for teaching at lower levels), all language explanations, dictations, and exercises. There are also optional Stage Exams, which can be used to assess learners before they progress to the next level.
When stage exams are conducted in a classroom setting, students complete printed answer sheets, and the teacher marks these. However, students can also take the exams outside school – online. An exam can easily be allocated to a student, who can then use any browser to log into their Callan account and take it. This is especially handy for students receiving online lessons, and also means that valuable lesson time is freed up for practice and learning rather than testing. Online stage exams contain full audio for listening sections, and are automatically timed and marked, which is convenient for schools.
The Online Callan Classroom (OCC) is a unique platform designed for delivering group or one-to-one Callan lessons online via an internet browser. Teachers and students can meet in a videocall environment where everything needed for the lesson is already in place. The OCC contains all Teacher’s Books, all Student’s Books, and all charts. And, for the teacher, there is a range of easy-to-use controls to ensure that lessons run smoothly.
Before a teacher can use the Callan Method with students, they must have some understanding of the methodology, and they need to practise teaching with the Method together with a trainer who can provide constructive feedback and practical help. Taking part in an official Callan Teacher’s Training Course is by far the best way to get to grips with the practical aspects of delivering an effective Callan Method lesson. This intense course ensures that new teachers can get started and conduct lessons effectively.
The Callan Teacher’s Guide, on the other hand, is for use on a regular basis beyond any initial training course. It is published in eBook format and, once allocated to a user, it will appear conveniently inside their Callan App. The Guide looks in depth at the thinking behind the Method, lesson planning, the delivery of lessons, course management, teaching beginners, how to introduce new language items, and many other aspects of Callan Method teaching. The book is clearly written and is interactive, containing regular ‘concept-check’ questions to ensure understanding, and numerous videos to illustrate different elements of teaching.
The Callan Teacher’s Guide is a go-to reference for all teachers, no matter how long they’ve been using the Method. It also acts as an invaluable quality-control resource for school owners and teacher trainers.
Language schools often face challenges trying to match teaching resources with patterns of student demand. Callan Teaching Services (CTS) supports Callan Accredited schools in this area by enabling them to offer online language classes taught by CTS’ own experienced and qualified native English and Spanish teachers. Students pay their school for lessons in the normal way, but the online teacher representing the school is provided by CTS.
